"We also found that these people had a slower decline in memory loss over five years."

Walking is good for brain health

“Professor Winston Byblow, a brain researcher and sport and exercise scientist at the University of Auckland, has found regular exercise significantly increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, nourishing cells and helping thought.” He says that walking for 45 minutes, five times a week reduces our brain’s age by 10 years.  If strength training is added to the mix, it provides more benefits.  Here at Short Walks in Auckland, we encourage you to walk daily and by adding variety to your walks, you are stimulating your brains cells which helps to reverse the effects of ageing. So get your shoes on and head outside!

Walks in Auckland - walking with children

What age do you start taking children on short walks in Auckland

My general advice is from ages 5 or 6.

But it does depend on your child, their attention span and how much energy they have.

Think carefully when choosing the walk.

Does it have something that will interest your child and keep them motivated?

Are they happy to wait until the end for a playground?

Or would they like a playground at mid-point?

Would they like to play in the sand at the beach so that they can have a rest?

Or are they adventurous and would enjoy exploring tunnels with torches?

Perhaps they would like to go with a friend or they are happy to keep company with your pet dog.

There are many options and as they get older they will enjoy more.

When I lived in England, I went walking with my husband-to-be and his friend Tony and Tony’s daughter Joanna.

Joanna must have been about 3 or 4 years old.  It was May and the bluebells were out and it was a beautiful spring day.  Joanna walked about 10kms that day and only asked to be carried for a short while.  I was amazed at the stamina of the wee girl.

Make the walk a fun adventure and your children will have many happy memories.

Pack a picnic or carry snacks and water with you to keep the “hungries” away, and be sure to have hats and sun block handy on sunny days.
